Baidyanath Dham is one of the most sacred Hindu pilgrimage sites in India. Located in Deoghar district of Jharkhand, the temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is among the twelve Jyotirlingas of India. The temple is popularly known as Baba Baidyanath Temple or Baba Dham and attracts millions of devotees every year.
Baidyanath Dham is also considered one of the 51 Shakti Peethas, making it a unique place where both Lord Shiva and Goddess Shakti are worshipped together.
According to Hindu mythology, the demon king Ravana performed severe penance to please Lord Shiva. Impressed with Ravana’s devotion, Lord Shiva gifted him a sacred Shivling and instructed him not to place it on the ground during the journey to Lanka.
While passing through Deoghar, Ravana stopped for a short break and handed the Shivling to a cowherd boy. The Shivling was placed on the ground and became permanently fixed there. This sacred Shivling later became the famous Baidyanath Jyotirlinga.
The temple’s name “Baidyanath” means “Divine Healer.” It is believed Lord Shiva healed Ravana after his penance, which is why Shiva is worshipped here as Baba Baidyanath.
Baidyanath Temple is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas, which are considered the holiest shrines of Lord Shiva in India.
The temple is also regarded as a Shakti Peeth because devotees believe that the heart of Goddess Sati fell at this location.
The temple complex includes the main shrine and around 21 smaller temples dedicated to various Hindu deities. The main temple has a tall pyramidal tower with traditional Nagara-style architecture.
