Deoghar is one of the holiest pilgrimage destinations in India, famous for the sacred Baidyanath Temple, also known as Baba Baidyanath Dham or Baba Dham. It is located in the state of Jharkhand and is among the twelve Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva, making it an important center of Shaivism.
The temple is also considered one of the 51 Shakti Peethas because devotees believe that the heart of Goddess Sati fell here. Due to the combined presence of Shiva and Shakti, Baidyanath Dham holds exceptional religious importance for Hindu devotees.
According to Hindu mythology, the demon king Ravana performed intense penance to please Lord Shiva. Pleased by his devotion, Shiva granted him a divine Shivling with the condition that it should never be placed on the ground during the journey to Lanka. During the journey, Ravana had to stop and handed the Shivling to a cowherd boy (believed to be Lord Vishnu in disguise). The Shivling was placed on the ground at Deoghar and became permanently fixed there.
The name “Baidyanath” means “Lord of Physicians” or “Divine Healer.” It is believed that Lord Shiva healed Ravana after his severe penance, which is why Shiva is worshipped here in this form.
Historical records mention that parts of the temple were rebuilt around 1596 by Raja Puran Mal. The temple complex has remained an important pilgrimage site for several centuries.
The Baidyanath Temple complex consists of the main shrine and 21 additional temples dedicated to different Hindu deities. The architecture follows the traditional Nagara style.
