Bodh Gaya, located in the Gaya district of Bihar, is one of the most sacred pilgrimage sites in India. While Bodh Gaya is world-famous as the place where Lord Buddha attained enlightenment, the nearby city of Gaya (often referred to as Gaya Ji) holds immense religious significance for Hindus as the most prominent site for performing Pind Daan—a ritual offering for the peace of ancestors’ souls.
Pind Daan is a Hindu ritual performed for the salvation of departed souls. According to Hindu scriptures, performing Pind Daan at Gaya ensures the liberation (moksha) of the soul.
The practice is especially significant during Pitru Paksha (a 16-day period of paying homage to ancestors), which draws lakhs of devotees annually.
It is believed that Lord Rama himself performed Pind Daan here for his father, King Dasharatha.
Vishnupad Temple – The central temple where the footprint of Lord Vishnu is imprinted on a rock; considered the holiest spot for Pind Daan.
Phalgu River – A sacred river where part of the ritual is conducted.
Akshayavat Tree – An eternal banyan tree under which final rites are performed.
Pretshila and Ramshila Hills – Sacred hills with mythological relevance, often visited during the rituals.
Gaya is about 12 km from Bodh Gaya, and both are well-connected by road and rail.
Nearest Airport: Gaya International Airport (GAY)
Pilgrims are guided by Pandits (Gayawals) who specialize in performing Pind Daan.
Offerings include pinda (rice balls), til (sesame seeds), and holy water, along with chants and mantras.
Rituals can be one-day or multiple-day ceremonies based on one’s requirement or tradition.
Best Time to Visit: September–October (during Pitru Paksha), but rituals can be performed year-round.
Accommodation: Both budget and premium hotels are available in Bodh Gaya and Gaya.
