Bhadohi, also known as Sant Ravidas Nagar, is a culturally rich district in eastern Uttar Pradesh, located between Varanasi and Prayagraj. While today it is globally recognized as the Carpet City of India, Bhadohi’s historical significance dates back thousands of years—blending spiritual heritage, Mughal patronage, and colonial trade.
The region of Bhadohi finds mentions in Hindu scriptures and Puranas.
It is believed to be associated with Sage Durvasa and other ancient hermitages.
The Ganges River, which flows nearby, made Bhadohi part of a historically significant trade and pilgrimage corridor.
Bhadohi is named Sant Ravidas Nagar in honor of Sant Ravidas, the 15th-century saint, reformer, and poet who was born in Seer Govardhanpur (nearby Varanasi).
The teachings of Sant Ravidas on equality, dignity of labor, and spirituality deeply influenced the region’s cultural and social life.
During the Mughal period, Bhadohi emerged as a prominent center of carpet weaving, particularly under Mughal emperors like Akbar and Shah Jahan, who encouraged Persian-style textile craftsmanship in India.
|Skilled weavers from Iran and Central Asia were invited to India, and many settled in the Bhadohi region, fusing local and Persian styles.
The region became part of the Jaunpur Sultanate influence at various points in history.
The British East India Company recognized the export value of Bhadohi carpets and supported their production for European markets.
Bhadohi rugs gained international fame during the 19th century, especially in the UK and USA.
During the colonial period, Bhadohi was administratively part of the Mirzapur district.
After India’s independence in 1947, Bhadohi remained under Mirzapur district until 1994, when it was made a separate district and named Sant Ravidas Nagar.
In 2014, the original name Bhadohi was reinstated by the Government of Uttar Pradesh.
Over centuries, carpet weaving evolved from a Mughal-sponsored art form into the economic backbone of the district.
Bhadohi is today India’s largest carpet weaving cluster, with over 3 million artisans directly or indirectly associated with the industry.
Declared a Town of Export Excellence by the Government of India.
Received a Geographical Indication (GI) tag for its hand-knotted carpets.
Hosts national and international carpet fairs, including collaborations with CEPC (Carpet Export Promotion Council).
