Badrinath Temple, also known as Badrinarayan Mandir, is one of the holiest Hindu temples dedicated to Lord Vishnu. Located in the town of Badrinath in Chamoli district of Uttarakhand, it is part of both the Chhota Char Dham (in Uttarakhand) and the original Char Dham (Pan-India) pilgrimage circuits.
The temple is nestled in the Garhwal Himalayas at an altitude of 3,133 meters on the banks of the sacred Alaknanda River, with the twin peaks of Nar and Narayan in the background.
One of the 108 Divya Desams (sacred abodes of Lord Vishnu).
Believed to be established by Adi Shankaracharya in the 8th century.
According to legends, Lord Vishnu meditated here, and Goddess Lakshmi took the form of a Badri tree to provide him shade.
Built in North Indian (Nagara) style with a conical-shaped dome.
Colorful façade with intricate carvings, gold-gilded Garbhagriha.
Houses a black stone idol (Shaligram) of Lord Badrinarayan in a meditative posture.
Other idols include Nar-Narayan, Uddhav, Garuda, and Kubera.
Opens: April/May (on Akshaya Tritiya)
Closes: October/November (on Vijaya Dashami or Bhai Dooj) .
Remains closed during winter due to heavy snowfall. The idol is moved to Joshimath for worship during this time.
